There's been enough written about today's passing of Indians pitcher and broadcaster Herb Score that I won't rehash his history here. But, I wanted to take a couple of minutes to reflect on Herb's influence in my life.
You see, I was a baseball player and fan from the time I was 5 or 6 ... and the voice that always brought those games to life for me was Herb Score.
Keep in mind, when I was growing up, cable TV wasn't really commonplace just yet.
So, while the Indians were on the tube, it wasn't any more than 20 games or so on WUAB.
That meant, to get your fix, you had to listen to the radio. And that meant the voice of Herb Score.
Sure, he became adept at messing up names, and sometimes got lost while describing the action. But, that was also part of his charm. But, Herbie had a greater effect upon me. You see, I wanted to BE him.
I'm pretty sure that at a school-sponsored senior graduation party at my high school, we all wrote down our goals for life.
I believe I wrote down that I wanted to replace Herb Score in the broadcast booth.
I mean, what could be better? Watching and calling baseball games all summer long?
While I didn't quite achieve that goal, I do think the idea of becoming Herb is what pushed me to pursue journalism and broadcasting.
So, to Herb's family, my thoughts and prayers.
And to Herb himself, thanks for the inspiration, and remember it's always a "beautiful day for baseball."
